Emerald Valley has “taken the bran out of the mash” and structured our mashes to give a balanced treat for any horse. Mashes are ideal for the horse as the water improves digestibility and gut flow to a greater degree than a dry feed. Hot mashes warm the body core and so help maintain condition in cold weather. When you look at a treat, look at the ingredients. Herbs, spices, apple, carrots — these are great. They are present in reasonable levels and the passage through the small intestine will sort them out. It is the major ingredients. High starch and sugary treats need to be considered carefully, especially in relation to what you are currently feeding. On the other hand, choose a fiber based treat. It’s what the horse is designed to eat and will ensure that the starch load is low.
